Following in the Footsteps of Zillow

December 16, 2011

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

We have spent the last 4+ years growing CheckOutMyCards.com to the point where we are ready to now take a big leap into a 27,000 sqft building. As part of the move & expansion, we needed to buy some additional furniture. Last week we were hunting for a conference table, couch and some other furniture on craigslist when we got “lucky” and discovered a large amount of furniture that was being moved from an skyscraper in downtown Seattle.

Their plan was to move the office furniture to warehouse in Kent where the public could pick through it, and they would liquidate it over the next week. We mentioned that we might be willing to take all of it, and they allowed us to swing by and look through it before they began the move. So, last week we visited the skyscraper and were waiting for the security guard to let us in to the office when we discovered that Zillow had just moved, and we were at their old headquarters. You can take a tour of Zillow’s new HQ. When they moved, they opted to get all new furniture. Ironically, they had taken the same strategy as we have done, and their old furniture was nearly all recycled furniture originally from Microsoft. Walking through their old head quarters, we found ourselves literally following in the footsteps of Zillow.

For a little more than the cost of moving, we have acquired more than enough furniture to furnish our entire building and then some. The total came to about 30 truck loads. We have been joking about launching a new site… CheckOutMyFurniture.com. It is nice to think that we are building for the future on furniture that was originally purchased by the largest Seattle area tech startup (Microsoft) and most recently used by a company that was considered the largest Seattle area startup by Seattle20.com for many years (Zillow). The only reason they are no longer on top of the Seattle Startup Index is that they are no longer considered a startup.

We will do our best to continue the tradition, and use this furniture to launch our company to new heights.

Really BIG News + Holiday Shipping

December 3, 2011

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and we have 27,000 new reasons to be jolly!

If you have followed our site for any time, you probably noticed how rapidly we have been growing. We moved into a 2,000 sqft warehouse just under 4 years ago, took less than two years to outgrow that, and upgraded to a 6,000 sqft warehouse. Again we took less than 2 years to outgrow that. This time we are making a huge leap to a 27,000 sqft building. We just signed the lease yesterday, and we are starting to make plans for orchestrating the move.

Holiday Shipping
In honor of the 27 thousand sqft that we are moving to, we came up with a 27¢ special.
Normally our standard shipping is $3 for the first card and 25¢ for each additional card.

From now until December 27th, we will ship the first 11 cards for only $3.
That comes out to $0.2727272727272…. per card for the first 11 cards.

No account required. No extra fee for international orders. All cards will be shipped in penny sleeves. Normal extra fees apply for toploaders, graded or jumbo cards.
See Shipping Policy for full details.

Happy 4th of July!

July 2, 2010

We here at COMC would like to wish all of you a great holiday weekend! Thank you for your continued support and loyalty!

Just a reminder, too, that our phones will be turned off Monday in observance of the holiday. Speaking of celebrations, we celebrated Tim’s 32nd birthday today by surprising him with a new office chair. (The humble CEO of our company deserved a better throne to sit on, after enduring a used conference room chair all this time!)

Finally, just a heads up to let you know that we’ll be making some announcements regarding The National in the coming weeks. So stay tuned for those…and stay safe this weekend!

Next American Idol with ties to the Hobby?

February 23, 2010

Tyler Grady one of the next American Idol hopefuls is trying to make his way to the top.  His dad Derek Grady, VP and Director of Grading at SGC, is his biggest fan.  Last week in Las Vegas our own CCCardfactory was with Derek, who was frantically looking for a TV to watch the show.  It was then that he put two and two together to realize that his son was climbing up the ranks, apparently with two broken wrists.  Watch him on youtube.

CheckOutMyCards applauds his efforts and wishes him luck!!!!!

100K reasons to expand

January 20, 2010

I recently posted about the site reaching 1 million cards for sale. 6 weeks have passed, and we have grown by 10% to 1.1 million cards for sale!

This brings me to our big news and a flashback from 2 years ago… We are moving and hiring.

Upcoming Move
To keep pace with the growing demand for the service, we have spent the last couple months preparing to move into a larger space. Our goal is to complete the move without any disruptions to any of our services. Everything will continue as scheduled. Orders will continue to be shipped without skipping a beat. We expect to hit all of our guaranteed due dates for processing cards going up for sale. To make sure this happens smoothly, we are spreading parts of the move over the next couple weeks. Next week we will update the site with our new mailing address. Until then, you can continue shipping packages to our current address.

Bigger Workspaces
With a dozen people working from our current location, everyone has been working in tight quarters. With the new location each person will have at least twice as much space to work. This should help improve efficiency and accuracy which will allow us to absorb the increased overhead without needing to increase any fees.

More Workspaces
Not only will each workspace be larger, but we will also have twice as many workspaces. Our goal is to grow to 25-30 employees over the next three years. The new location will make that possible. If you would like to join our team, get your resume prepared. During the first week of February we will start posting our job openings. Keep an eye on the blog for more news.

Public Access
We are using every inch of our current location, so there was no opportunity for us to make a place for customers to stop by. In the new location, we have a portion of the space that is sectioned off for buyers and sellers to drop by. We are excited about all the ways we anticipate using this space. I look forward to having a place where you can swing by when you are in the Seattle area. Over the next several months we will start announcing what will be available here.

Coy Bacon passes away

December 29, 2008

Last week Coy Bacon passed away. Coy was selected to three Pro Bowls during his 14-year career as a defensive lineman in the NFL and traveled as a motivational speaker. You can learn more about Coy on Wikipedia.

A longtime friend of Coy’s let me know today that he was able to purchase a couple of Coy’s cards on Christmas day. We shipped the cards on Friday, and they arrived in Ohio today. They were just in time for the visitation, and one of the cards was given to Coy’s granddaughter who was very appreciative.

It is encouraging to hear that our service is being used to help spread some joy. Our prayers go out to the Bacon family.
