Port Sale Offers

September 15, 2011

By popular demand we have created a new Port Sale offer system. The old system had some limitations for dealing with large offers. Now it is pretty slick and completely automated. So feel free to start posting Port Sale ads again.

All Port Sale ads will get the new Send Offer button.

Port Sale offers must be at least 20% of the total asking price or 10% of the total book price. If the buyer does not have enough funds in their account to cover the offer, the seller will recieve a Request For Proposal (RFP) instead of a traditional offer.

New Offer Related Functionality

RFP – This is a Request for Proposal. It could be thought of as an unfunded offer. This allows people to make offers on entire ports without first having the required store credit in their account. When the sellers accepts an RFP, it doesn’t immediately execute the transaction. Instead it goes back to the buyer as a proposal. The buyer will have to acquire the required store credit before the proposal can be accepted and the transaction executed. Just like normal offers, RFPs can be negotiated back and forth. The only difference is that the buyer’s store credit is not locked while the transaction is still open.

Less than 50% offers – When making an offer on a Port Sale, we allow you to offer less than 50% of the total asking price.

Accepting offers with sold items – When an offer has one or more items sold we only allow you to send a counteroffer. However, if you are the buyer and you counteroffer with the seller’s originally proposed price, we will now automatically push the offer through. This is particularly useful when trying to negotiate Port Sale offers or other large offers.

Removed Items – If items sell before a buyer or seller gets a chance to respond to an offer, those sold items must be removed from any counteroffers. In the past we didn’t make it obvious which items had been removed from previous offers. Now if that is the case, we show you a list of any removed items when viewing an offer. This is enable for open offers as well as all historical offers.

Paged Offer Details – We used to always show all items in an offer on the historical offer details pages. Unfortunately this made the Offer Details page useless when an offer had thousands of items. Now we show 10 items per page just like any of the Make Offer or View Offer pages.

Contest for a new COMC logo

September 15, 2011

For a long time CheckOutMyCards has been referred to as COMC. We have also been getting more and more requests to expand beyond just cards (e.g. coins, comics, memorabilia…). To prepare for this we acquired the domain www.comc.com.

Now we’re looking for a new logo that reflects our love of collectibles. We’re putting it out there for your participation. Go to http://www.mycroburst.com/contests/business-logo-comc to see the parameters and requirements. Check out the entries, make comments, and perhaps submit a design of your own?

$888 will be awarded to the winning logo design. Pass this info on to any creative eyes you know.

Contest ends: Tuesday Sept. 20, 2011 at 3:00 pm.

Processing Backlog & More Hiring

August 21, 2011

It has been a while since I got a chance to post. So I wanted to give you a quick updated.

A couple weeks ago we got back from the National and posted a few teaser stats on our facebook page. Here is a sneak peak at the packages that we shipped back from Chicago.

People dropped off more than 150,000 cards. Once they arrived at our warehouse we had less than 4 weeks to process them. We normally process 50,000 cards per week, so adding 3+ weeks of work to our existing backlog has provided a great challenge for our team.

Fortunately we are actively hiring. We had two new people start in the last couple weeks, we have another one starting on Monday, and we have a couple more that we plan to extend offers to once background checks are cleared. If you know people in the Seattle area that have a good work ethic, are great team members, and want to be part of a rapidly growing startup, please encourage them to contact hr@comc.com

Only 3 million left for sale.
1 million different cards.

New Big Seller
You may notice that user Rookies_n_Jerseys has entered the top 10 sellers list. This is pretty impressive considering he started selling on CheckOutMyCards.com less than 2 months ago.

New Biggest Seller?
You should also take note of SwagCards. He is making a steady climb up the charts. Currently at #3, he has expressed his intent to make #1.

NSCC Drop-Off Preview

July 14, 2011

Attending the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago? Have cards you want to sell?
Instead of shipping them to us, you can just drop them off at our booth (#445).

You can take advantage of any of our published processing services, or you can use a promotional service that will only be available at the National.

Here is how you will be able to use the show-only service:
□ 1 Come find us at booth #445
□ 2 Grab a special 550-count box
□ 3 Fill it with no more than five different products
□ 4 Drop it back off with us before the end of the show

Specific pricing and processing time will only be revealed at the show.

If you just want to use one of our normal processing services, that is fine. You are welcome to drop those off as well. The show-only service is the only one that will have the 5-product limitation.

What we mean by “Product”

A product is a specific set of cards. Not just a year, not just a sport, not just a brand. A product is something like “2008 Bowman Chrome Baseball” or “2010/11 Famous Fabrics Ink – Hockey Edition”. A product includes any card that it would be possible to pull from opening a specific pack.
Note: These packs must be from an original manufacturer, and cannot be repackaged products from a variety of years.

Example of Same Product:
2008 UD Masterpieces #82 - Felix Hernandez - Courtesy of CheckOutMyCards.com & 2008 Upper Deck Yankee Stadium Legacy Collection #4795 - Don Mattingly - Courtesy of CheckOutMyCards.com
These two cards count as the same product, because you can pull Yankee Stadium Legacy insert cards out of packs of 2008 UD Masterpieces. Same pack, Same product.

Example of Different Products:
1995 Fleer #269 - Ken Griffey Jr. - Courtesy of CheckOutMyCards.com & 1996 Fleer #238 - Ken Griffey Jr. - Courtesy of CheckOutMyCards.com

These two cards are both Fleer, both baseball, and both the same player, but they come from different products. One is a 1995 Fleer and one is 1996 Fleer. Different pack, different product.

To take advantage of this special you can have a maximum of 5 different products in your 550-count box. If you’ve got more than five, even if it’s only one or two stray cards, you won’t be eligible. We think the best way to take advantage of this deal is to buy unopened boxes from some of the great vendors at The National, crack open the product, maybe take advantage of some wrapper redemption promotions, and then just pop them into our 550-count boxes and drop them off at our booth. You are welcome to bring cards from home. Just remember the 5-product rule: same pack, same product; different pack, different product. See you at the National!

Card Details Beta 4

July 2, 2011

Lots of additional feedback incorporated. Give this version a whirl.

I also added a link at the bottom of the page so that you can toggle between the old style and the new style to see what you like about each version. Let me know what you think.

Why are we doing this?
Many of you have commented that we shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken. Well, there is a significant drawback to the old design. It was optimized for the case when we only had 1 card for sale. This was an excellent assumption for the first few years.

Now we average 3 cards for sale per listing. As a result the old style gave a huge advantage to the cheapest card. This caused people to really fight for that cheapest spot. The data that we see that you guys don’t have access to is that sellers are undercutting prices unnecessarily. Buyers are willing to pay more, but sellers are trying to get that top spot.

Our solution: More than 1 “top spot”. The new page is designed to feature 3 cards above the fold for about 60-80% of our users. The rest of the users that have smaller monitors will only see 2, but that is still a lot better than the 1.

Now our sellers can focus on charging fair prices instead of slashing to get the top spot due to limitations with our old design.

I hope that shines some light on these growing pains.

Quarterly & Yearly Stats

July 2, 2011

After 4 years, our exhaustive quarterly stats are getting too long to put on fliers and business cards. So we are going to start using our yearly stats on printed materials. We will continue to publish the quarterly stats on the blog, but we will be doing the abbreviated year over year version of the quarterly stats.

Cards Sold
Since we have made it easier to purchase ports and to do large offers, there has been a big spike in cards sold. Though this is interesting, it dilutes that value of the cards sold stat. So we are now ignoring all transactions that contain more than 1,000 cards to try to get a more accurate representation of how many cards are sold.

Yearly Stats

* The 2010-11 Cards Sold does not include 0.25M cards that sold in transactions that had more than 1,000 cards.

Quarterly Stats

* The 2010-11 Q2 Cards Sold does not include 117K cards that sold in transactions that had more than 1,000 cards.

COMC Lockout

June 30, 2011

Following the example of the NBA and NFL, the owner of CheckOutMyCards.com has decided to lock out the workers over a labor dispute. Despite push back from workers that love their job, the owner feels that all workers should get a 4 day weekend after reaching all quarterly goals and setting a record for most cards shipped in a month (92,254).

This lockout will last until Tuesday July 5th. At this point, workers will be allowed to resume their regular schedules. No phone calls will be answered or emails responded to during the lockout.

Since it is only the workers that are being locked out, you can expect that the owner will likely continue to make updates to the experimental Card Details page during the course of the lockout.

:) Enjoy your holiday weekend!
